- 2 cups sugar
- 2/3 cup boiling water
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- 2-3 drops of peppermint / spearmint essential oil
First, put you water, sugar, cream of tarter and vinegar into a saucepan. Mix the ingredients together well and bring to a boil without stirring until the mixture becomes brittle. You can test this with by using some cold water if you’d like.
Then pour the mixture onto a marble surface that has been layered with vegetable oil and wait until the mixture is cool enough to easily handle. Lift the candy without stirring, and then pull it, doubling over evenly and pulling it out as long as you can, keeping the grain all in one unified direction. Add your spearmint essential oil while pulling.
Once the candy is too stiff to pull more, shift it into a long rope about half of an inch in diameter. After that, cut it into small pieces and immediately set into a bowl of confectioners sugar, stirring until well coated. When dry, put inot a glass jar, cover it, and allow it to stand for several days in a warm place.
This recipe can also work well with other oils like lemon or orange if you are feeling adventurous!
