Oregano oil has been utilized in medicine since the time of the Greeks and Romans in ancient times. Its name is derived from the Greek words “oros” and “ganos.” It is a powerful antioxidant, with 42 times the antioxidant level of apples and 4 times the level of blueberries.
How to Use Oregano Oil
Although oregano oil is probably best known for its use in Italian food, it is also commonly used as an essential oil. Oregano oil is additionally known for its health benefits and is great for fighting against certain types of bacteria, relieving inflammation and pain, and is also great for massage therapy. It can be taken orally or applied to the skin.
Depending on the condition being treated, oregano essential oil can be taken either by mouth or applied to the skin. Oregano essential oil should always be diluted because of its strong concentration.
- On the skin: To treat skin conditions or infections, you can dilute the oregano oil using olive oil at a concentration of 1 teaspoon (5ml) and then apply.
- Under the tongue: You can also take oregano oil under the tongue. Simply dilute with olive oil (one drop of oregano oil for every drop of olive oil. Add one to three drops of the combined oils under your tongue, hold it there for a few mintutes, and then rinse with water.
- Orally: If you decide to take oregano oil orally, simply add a couple drops into a cup (237 ml) of water, gargle and then swallow.
