How to Make Oregano Oil

To make oregano oil, what you will need are oregano leaves and an EssenEx extraction kit. Follow our detailed instructions below and in no time you’ll have your own oregano essential oil! If you have any questions, please email us at info@oilextech.com or fill out our customer feedback form on our contact page for more information on how to make oregano oil.

1.) What You Need

  • EssenExTM 100 Extraction Kit
  • 100 grams of Oregano leaves, chopped or ground

2.) Preparation

  • Place Oregano in Freezer for 24 hours
  • For initial runs, use 100 grams. Later, more or less may be used
  • It may be necessary to add water if running dry powder with ratio ½ ml water per gram of botanical. ( ½ :1 by mass), if fresh try first run without added water
  • Place in EssenExTM as described in user manual

3.) Trial

  • Place the reactor into the microwave with mug of water
    • If multiple batches are run, change water in the mug between trials
  • Each batch should run for 5.5 minutes on a power setting of HIGH (1100 watts)
    • Lower power units: simply add 30 seconds to a minute for the cooking phase
  • Allow the batch to cool for 6 minutes. In or outside the microwave. Caution: do not raise lid prior to 4 minutes and be careful if moving from microwave as jar will be quite warm initially
    • This is a key step to your success. Cooling allows the vapors to condense and form more oil and it allows the reactor to be handled much easier!

4.) Collection

  • Pour top contents of the beaker into the easy separator and rotate it using the palms of your hands while resting it on a cloth (kitchen towel) on a hard surface (counter top). The motion should be similar to starting a fire with sticks.
  • After a few seconds, stop rotating the separator and observe the oil layer
  • Repeat the process if you believe more oil will collect
  • Once the oil is separated (above the hydrosol in the neck of the flask), use the pipette to place it in a vial

5.) Yield

  • Upon lifting the lid, a small amount of ice should be remaining on screw
    • If not, then reduce the amount of water added
  • With nominally good Oregano, 0.2 to 0.4% by mass
    • 100 grams yields roughly 0.2 to 0.4 ml oil

This essential oil is also commonly used to help provide relief for acne, Athlete’s Foot, dandruff, and warts, among others.

Oregano Oil for Colds

One reason people extract oregano oil is because it contains antioxidant properties. This essential oil is recognized for helping to relieve cold symptoms and is known to help remedy certain viruses.

Does Oregano Oil Kill Viruses?

Oregano oil is known for containing a property called carvacrol, which has been found to kill some viruses and even bacteria. While oregano oil is advertised as an immunity booster, a remedy for acne, a pain reliever, etc., it is not an official cure. Nevertheless, oregano oil does contain antibacterial properties which helps to kill viruses.

About OilExTech

OilExTech was founded in 2012 by Bill Dean and David Hackleman. Our company got its start as a research project at OSU, by focusing on small-scale oil extraction, including oregano essential oil extraction. Dean and Hackleman, along with three graduate students, discovered an efficient method of oil extraction using microwave ovens. From there, the men began a two and a half year development process until the kits developed into what they are today.

We have several EssenEx oil extraction kits available. Each of these are able to extract high quality oils from oregano, lavender, hemp, orange zest, and more. Our extraction kits are effective tools suited for students, professionals, and hobbyists alike.

Although there are certainly products that are cheaper or capable of larger-scale production, the EssenEx from OilExTech is the perfect balance between affordability, efficiency, and ease of use. If you have any questions about the oregano oil extraction process or our EssenEx products, please email us at info@oilextech.com or fill out our customer feedback form on our contact page for more information on how to make oregano oil.
